May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month.

According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, “Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. It occurs when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds) triggers mutations, or genetic defects, that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors.” They also describe skin cancer as the most common form of cancer in the United States.

The Skin Cancer Foundation also shared some alarming and scary statistics regarding UV radiation and skin cancer…

  • Each year in the U.S. OVER 5.4 million cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer are treated in more than 3.3 million people
  • Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined
  • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime
  • More people develop skin cancer because of tanning than develop lung cancer because of smoking

While we normally think of UV radiation affecting our skin, it can be very harmful to our eyes too! Kate Edwards, from Friends for Sight, states “Sunscreen is essential to protect your skin, but a good pair of sunglasses is critical to help protect your eyes.” Here at Crown Vision Center, our number one priority is to keep your eyes healthy.

Aside from scheduling your annual eye exam, we highly recommend investing in a good pair of sunglasses. We carry all of your favorite designer sunglass brands, but one of our favorites is Maui Jim. The full Maui Jim line can be viewed at our Chesterfield location. If you visit this store, you will be able to try on all of Maui Jim’s sunglasses!

Not only are they stylish, they are also VERY practical. Maui Jim earned the Seal of Recommendation from The Skin Cancer Foundation. This is a symbol only given to those sunglasses who meet their safe and protective sun protection requirements. In order for sunglasses to earn the seal, they must filter out at least 99 percent of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. Maui Jim has earned this seal for all of their sunglasses!

This sounds like a WIN-WIN in our eyes! Visit our Chesterfield location today to try on your new pair of Maui Jim sunglasses!
